Chicago Police officers shot and killed a man on the city's West Side Tuesday night, triggering a backlash from witnesses who began pelting officers with rocks.

Police and witnesses on the block gave conflicting accounts of the 8:15 p.m. shooting in the 1100 block of North Montecello in Humboldt Park.

Officers were summoned to the area about a man with a gun, said police spokesman Pat Camden. A police sergeant was first on the scene and the chase was on. At one point, Camden said, the man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the sergeant. The sergeant fired his gun several times, killing the gunman, Camden said. He said officers found a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, along with four bags of crack cocaine, at the man's side.

Markineta Harrington said she saw the shooting of her cousin Jovan Walker, 24.

"[Walker] didn't have a gun. He just got out a jail a month ago -- he didn't have a job, how's he going to buy a gun?" she asked.
