La. officer who was shot in the face still critical

NEW ORLEANS— A police officer remained in critical condition Tuesday, a day after he was shot in the face by a man he was chasing.

Officer Andreas Gonzales, 25 and in his third year with the New Orleans Police Department, was shot in the face when he ran after a passenger who had bolted from a car after a traffic stop.

He was recovering in Charity Hospital's intensive care unit in suburban Jefferson Parish, police spokeswoman Bambi Hall said.

Eddie Harrison III, 21, was booked Monday with attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting happened in the Algiers neighborhood on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

Police said the incident began as a traffic stop in which Joshua Hall, 17, was arrested for miscellaneous traffic violations and placed in a police cruiser. When his passenger — Harrison — bolted, Gonzales followed. He was shot a few blocks away, police said.

A manhunt by about 60 officers caught Harrison, who was booked with resisting arrest and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Harrison is also facing a federal charge of being a felon in possession of ammunition, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said Tuesday.

Letten said in a news release that Harrison had been convicted of armed robbery in 1999.

"It is our intention to work closely with the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office and ensure that they are able to bring all available state charges against this defendant," Letten said.
