N.Y. officer in stable condition after being slashed in face

The Associated Press

NEW YORK- A police officer was slashed in the face while attempting to subdue a man waving a knife in a Brooklyn supermarket, police said.

The officer was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital following the Monday attack, said police spokeswoman Officer Kathleen Price.

The injured officer, whose name was not released, responded to a call about an emotionally disturbed person at about 5:20 p.m. The man was shocked once with a Taser stun gun without any effect, and he knifed the officer in the face as he was being shocked a second time, Price said.

Witnesses said the attacker, who was often found outside the store and helped customers with their bags in exchange for tips, had told those in the store that he was trying to keep them safe.

"He was in there, claiming he was guarding us, with a knife," said 19-year-old Philly Allen, who works at the market's cash register. "He just said, 'I'm protecting the store.'"

Charges had not yet been announced against the unidentified suspect, who was being evaluated at Kings County Hospital Center, Price said.
