HANNIBAL, Mo. — A Homewood, Ill., man was fatally wounded Saturday evening by a Marion County Sheriff's deputy after escaping from custody in Iowa City, Iowa, and leading Missouri officers on a chase through Palmyra and Hannibal that sent one trooper to the hospital.
The identity of the 27-year-old man is not being released pending notification of next of kin, said Sgt. Brent Bernhardt of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The MHSP was notified at about 6:25 p.m. that a pickup truck had rammed a Palmyra Police Department vehicle on U.S. 61 in Palmyra after the officer attempted to stop the truck to investigate a careless driving complaint.
Officers learned later that the man had stolen the pickup when he escaped from a Johnson County, Iowa, sheriff's deputy at the Iowa City hospital.
The pickup continued south of U.S. 61. South of Palmyra, it crossed the median and struck headon a Marion County Sheriff's vehicle that was northbound on U.S. 61.
The truck continued south on U.S. 61. Near Mount Zion Church north of Hannibal it crossed the median and struck on the drivers side an MSHP vehicle that was northbound. The patrol car was then struck in the rear by a tractor trailer unit. The officer is in Hannibal Regional Hospital.
The pickup continued east on Route KK, where the driver attempted unsuccessfully to car jack a vehicle occupied by a woman and a small child.
At 7:15 p.m., officers learned that the man stole a Pontiac from a residence near Marion County Road 402. He was located by officers in the stolen vehicle southbound on Route 168.
After a failed attempt to stop the car, Hannibal Police used a tire deflating device. The car continued south on 168 and crashed about 1.5 miles north of U.S. 61 in Hannibal.
Marion County Sheriffs attempted to take the man into custody.
"Fearing for their safety, due to his actions, they discharged their service weapons at the suspect, striking him in the torso area," Bernhardt said.
The man was rushed to Hannibal Regional Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Bernhardt said.
