Shootout at Ill. motel leaves 2 cops wounded
BURBANK, Ill. — One person was killed and three others, including two Burbank police officers, were wounded in a shootout Monday night at a motel in the southwest suburb, officials said.
One officer was shot twice in the chest, but the bullets did not penetrate his bulletproof vest, said Burbank Fire Department Battalion Chief Timothy Kaufmann. The officer was also shot in the hand.
The second officer suffered a minor leg wound, Burbank police said. Both were treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and later released.
Shortly before 9 p.m., Burbank police received a 911 call about a man with a gun in one of the guest rooms at the Budget Inn Motel, 8450 S. Cicero Ave., police said.
As police stood outside the second-floor room, attempting to make contact with the occupants, shots were fired from inside the room, Ford said. Police then returned fire, he said.
Both people in the room were hit by the police gunfire, Ford said. Kendall Virgil, 18, of the 500 block of West 57th Street, Chicago, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The other was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, but the extent of his injuries was not immediately available.
Ford said two guns were found at the scene, a 9 mm with two 30-round clips and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber. He could not say whether Virgil and the wounded person were both firing at police. No charges have been filed as of Tuesday morning.
Why Virgil and the wounded suspect were at the motel is under investigation.
The shooting was under investigation by Burbank police, Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
