CHICAGO — Two men were fatally shot Sunday in separate confrontations with Chicago Police on the South Side, officials said.

Early Sunday, an armed man was shot and killed when he confronted an officer in the 2300 block of East 85th Street, said Officer John Mirabelli.

The patrol officer was responding to a report of shots fired about 1 a.m. when the man confronted him, police said. Two guns were recovered, officials said. A relative identified the deceased man as Shapell Terrell, 39.

Craig Greenlaw, who said he is Terrell's uncle, said he saw his nephew shot as Greenlaw watched from a window of the family's apartment building -- but thought it was a drive-by shooting.

"I saw them shoot him, and the bullets hit him, and he fell down,'' said Greenlaw, 49. He said he told his sister to call the police. "I saw his body shake. I'm thinking it's a drive-by.

"I ran back and I looked out the window, and I said, 'This is the police,' " Greenlaw said, spotting bulletproof vests.

Greenlaw said it appeared to him that Terrell was shot several times. A man who identified himself as Terrell's father -- Jim Terrell -- said information he received from the medical examiner's office suggests Terrell was shot several times. "I can't understand why they would do that,'' Jim Terrell said.

An autopsy is scheduled today.

Greenlaw disputed that two guns were recovered at the scene: "His hands were at the door, and there wasn't no guns in them."

Terrell had six children and worked as a garbage handler for Diamond Waste & Recycling, Greenlaw said. He had just left work, he said.

In another shooting, officers responding to a domestic disturbance in the 6800 block of South Aberdeen about 7:15 p.m. "were confronted by an armed offender" who was shot by police, police said.

A weapon was found at the scene, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shootings, Mirabelli said.

Overall, seven people have been shot by Chicago Police within the last two weeks, and four have died.
