SWAT team kills man, rescues daughter

The Associated Press

LYNWOOD, Calif. — A SWAT team member killed a man who allegedly wounded the mother of his 2-year-old daughter and then held the little girl hostage for more than two hours at his home in Lynwood, Calif., Los Angeles County officers said Monday.

The toddler was not harmed in the standoff late Sunday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Byron Ward said that deputies responding to a call found the wounded woman outside the house.

Gerrardo Arvallo, 32, was shot at about 11:30 p.m., authorities said.

"He refused to surrender or release his daughter, while making threats to kill himself," Deputy Ed Ward said.

Deputies believed the child was in imminent danger and fired a single shot that killed Arvallo when he was not near the child, authorities said.

Byron Ward said the SWAT team entered the house to save the girl, but he did not know whether Arvallo was shot before or after the team entered.

The girl's mother, Laura Sibrian, 29, was hospitalized in stable condition with an abdominal wound.
