LAPD uses deadly force on man chasing wife

Police arrived as suspect was running after his wife down the street

GARDENA, Calif. — Police near Los Angeles say officers have fatally shot a man who chased his estranged wife down the street and fired a gun at her multiple times, riddling her with bullets.

Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast says the incident may have been preceded by a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning.

Police say the suspect went to the apartment where his wife was staying with a relative. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and a woman screaming.

When officers arrived they found the woman fleeing on foot and the man chasing after her and shooting. One officer opened fire on the suspect, who died at the scene.

Prendergast says the woman was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition.
