ST. LOUIS — St. Louis's police chief says an officer who was shot as many as eight times during a traffic stop is expected to survive.
Chief Dan Isom says the 26-year-old policeman was talking to a driver outside the car he had just pulled over Thursday morning when someone in the vehicle's back seat opened fire, wounding the officer.
Isom credits the officer's bullet-resistant vest with saving his life. The victim's name was not released, though he remained hospitalized and was undergoing surgery later Thursday.
Police say they had three of the car's occupants and were searching for the suspected gunman.
Isom says the officer is a former Marine who served in Iraq and has been with the department since October 2008.
