ST LOUIS, Mo. — Police fatally shot a suspect brandishing a handgun near a market in St. Louis Tuesday night.

Rapid Deployment Unit officers approached the suspect and were threatened with a gun pointed at them, KMOV reported. In response officers opened fire and the man, identified as Deandra Pye, 39, fled. During the pursuit police continued to fire until Pye fell to the ground in a vacant lot.

Pye was pronounced dead at the scene. He fired a shot in the officers' direction when they approached him, according to reports, and KDSK reported police fired at least 60 rounds in the shootout.  Police say at first an officer thought a bullet penetrated his pants leg, but no bullet hole was found. The officer did feel the bullet pass, causing him to jump, police said.

No officers were injured. Police believe they were interrupting a robbery or assault.

"It may well be that they interrupted the robbery. But again, we're not really sure," St. Louis Police Capt. Michael Sack said. "We do have some video from the business that we're going to examine. Hopefully that will shed some more light on what happened."
