SHREVEPORT, La. — Amid a local District Attorney's decision to clear an officer involved in a fatal shooting, police released dash cam video of the incident.
Michael Gilyard, 44, was killed in December moments after he reportedly reached for a service weapon belonging to Shreveport Police Cpl. Bryan Lauzon, according to KSLA. Lauzon was in the area working an off-duty security job at an apartment complex and stopped Gilyard as there were reports of narcotics activity in the area.
During questioning it was revealed that Gilyard carried a concealed handgun, sources said, and after Lauzon disarmed him the two struggled off-camera over control of the officer's firearm. Police said Lauzon fired three shots, striking Gilyard, who later died at LSU Hospital.
Caddo Parish District Attorney Charles Scott said Wednesday an investigation into the incident occurred, and no charges will be filed against Lauzon, KTBS reported. The investigation showed Gilyard carried a large amount of cash, drugs and a concealed firearm.
"All the evidence clearly shows no wrongdoing in the actions of Officer Lauzon, either during the initial stop of Michael Gilyard or the subsequent altercation which resulted in the shooting," Scott said.
Shreveport Police Chief Willie Shaw says he will consider the DA's findings when determining whether Lauzon will return to his regular duties. Lauzon currently remains on administrative leave.
