SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An officer fatally shot a teen carrying a concealed assault weapon Saturday night, police said.

Ascencion Herrera, 17, was walking with a friend in Meadowview when two Sacramento police officers approached the pair, according to the Sacramento Bee. When they stepped out of their cruiser, they saw the end of an illegal assault rifle stick out from under Herrera's shirt.

Herrera then reached for the gun and an officer fired, killing him, according to police.

A cousin told CBS Sacramento that Herrera did not intend any harm, but that "he was doing wrong by carrying it."

Police confirmed the gun was real, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave per standard departmental policy.
