Vet: Chimps dangerous, officer did right thing

Animals' physical strength and unpredictability leave few options for someone encountering one that's agitated

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas-area veterinarian said police were right to shoot one chimpanzee and tranquilize another after the primates escaped from a backyard enclosure Thursday.

Dr. Toby Goldman, who used to treat the chimpanzees, said their physical strength and unpredictability leave few options for someone encountering one that's agitated.

"These animals can hurt people and property, so you need to treat them with respect," Goldman said. "There's no going up to the chimp and talking it back into the cage."

He said he believes responding officers did the right thing.
