Video: Philly police shoot, kill stabbing suspect

The suspect got into a fistfight, then stabbed a man before police arrived and ended the violence

By PoliceOne Staff

PHILADELPHIA — Surveillance video has been released that details the shooting death of a suspect by a plainclothes officer after he attacked another man outside a Philadelphia bar.

The nearly seven-minute-long footage shows what appears to be the entire incident from start to finish.

Mike Berry, 40, got into an altercation with another man outside a bar, then approached the same man after he got into a vehicle and stabbed him multiple times.

An unmarked police vehicle arrived on the scene carrying three plainclothes officers and the driver then got out and fired at Berry, who fell to the ground.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Berry had several previous run-ins with the law. Court documents show a 1991 conviction for robbery, another in 1992 for contempt of court, and a 1997 arrest for stealing a car.

Police were cleared of wrongdoing for the August shooting in February, according to the article.

Commissioner Charles Ramsey said that he didn’t know if the shooting could have been prevented because he wasn’t there.

“We send our people into the neighborhoods and they encounter some very dangerous people," he said. "You have to put it all in context."

Berry’s brother Tom — while mourning the loss of his younger sibling — made no excuse for him, saying that he holds no grudges against police.

“I still have respect for the officers and anyone in blue," he said. "I have friends and family who are police officers.”
