VETERAN, N.Y. — A state trooper was shot in a small New York town and the hunt for the suspect continued Sunday as the officer recovered in the hospital.

Trooper Sean M. Brown, 30, was shot in the abdomen early Saturday morning when he and his partner approached a car that pulled over in Veteran, N.Y.

He was reported in fair condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, N.Y., after surgery, the Elmira Star-Gazette reported.

Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, 43, an escapee from the Alden Correctional Facility in Erie County was being sought. Phillips fled the facility in early April, just four days shy of finishing his parole violation bid, police said.

Veteran residents were shaken after the incident, which occurred 20 miles away from and three months after another state trooper was fatally shot.

"It's hard to believe that we could have a similar type of incident so close together," said State Police Maj. Steven White.
