CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A fight among a crowd of 40 youths yesterday in Central Islip ended with two police officers in the hospital and four teenagers in handcuffs, Suffolk police said.
Officers came across "a large group engaged in a fight" near the Central Islip Library on Hawthorne Avenue at about 2:45 p.m. After police waded in, a female student from Ralph G. Reed Junior High School injured two officers while resisting arrest.
Police said one officer was injured in the shoulder and did not specify how the other officer was injured.
There was no word on how the fight began.
Police arrested three Ralph G. Reed students, ages 13, 14 and 15, and charged them with juvenile delinquency, resisting arrest and first-degree rioting.
Two of the students were charged with second-degree assault as juvenile delinquents.
Police also arrested Calvin Young, 16, a student at Centereach BOCES Learning Center, and charged him with first-degree rioting, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The injured officers were treated at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and released yesterday.
The three youngest suspects were released to their parents for a later appearance in Family Court. Young is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Jan. 8.
