JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 61-year-old man walking his dog died late Tuesday after being struck by a Jacksonville police car on its way to call of gunshots being fired, said the Florida Highway Patrol.

Lt. Bill Leeper said the accident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on North Pearl Street near West 24th Street north of Springfield. Leeper said four patrol cars, with emergency lights and sirens activated, were responding to the shots-fired call. Leeper said the third vehicle, being driving by Officer Nicole McBroom, 32, struck the man as he was crossing the street with his dog.

Ronnie James Wilson Sr. died at the scene. There were no other injuries, Leeper said. He said police are unsure what happened to the victim’s dog.

The Highway Patrol investigates all fatal crashes involving Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office vehicles. Leeper said the investigation is continuing.

Leeper said the report of gunshots came from just north of the accident scene. He knew no other details about that incident.
