Philly cop shot, in critical condition

The officer was shot in the abdomen while in a physical altercation with the suspect

By PoliceOne Staff

PHILADELPHIA — A Feltonville area police officer is listed in critical condition in the hospital after being shot in the abdomen Tuesday following a traffic stop.

First Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross said in a press conference that another officer pulled over a vehicle for a headlight violation when the vehicle drove off at a high rate of speed. The driver then ran into a store, prompting a witness to call 911.

Several officers ran into the store and a struggle ensued, resulting in one of the officers being shot, according to My Fox Philly.

Ross did not release the officer’s name, but said he was 41 and a 16-year veteran of the force.

One suspect is in custody and the weapon was recovered.

“This incident plays out the day-to-day danger that our police officers face on a regular basis,” Mayor Michael Nutter said. “To all the citizens, our officers are out here each and every day trying to make sure that all the rest of us are as safe as possible."
