DURHAM- A five-hour standoff in southeast Durham on Sunday ended with a man dead, the victim of what appeared to police to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police answered a call to the 3400 block of Long Ridge Road about 4 p.m. on a report that a man had barricaded himself inside his residence and was threatening to harm himself. The man didn't threaten to harm anyone else, according Durham Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

A brother-in-law of the victim said the man had fallen earlier in the day while on a walk with his wife. About 30 minutes after the fall, the man began acting erratically and ordered his wife out of the house. It was the man's wife who called police and paramedics, the relative said.

Officers attempting to negotiate with the man got no response from the house. Shortly after 8 p.m., police fired tear gas into the house. Around 8:15, the police department's Selective Enforcement Team entered the house and found the man's body.

Some neighbors were evacuated, and police prevented others from returning to their homes during the standoff. Street lights and some homes were darkened by police order, neighbors said.
