FAYETTEVILLE -- A Cumberland County sheriff's deputy died Friday when he wrecked his car as he was responding to a report of a fight.
Christopher Matthews, 26, was on his way to the scene in northern Cumberland County when his patrol car went off the road and flipped. Matthews was pinned inside his vehicle, deputies said.
The state Highway Patrol was investigating what led to the crash.
"We feel very sad today," Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler said. "We certainly have sympathy for the family, because we lost a very close person within the Sheriff's Office."
Matthews had worked for the Sheriff's Office since January 2002.
