Pa. man tries to eat cocaine during search

The Morning Call

BETHLEHEM- A Bethlehem man tried to swallow a couple of bags of crack cocaine after he was stopped by city officers Saturday night, police said.

Juan Beltran, 26, of 624 Broadway, is charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. He was arraigned Saturday before District Judge Nancy Matos Gonzalez and sent to Northampton County Prison under $100,000 bail.

Police said Beltran's car was stopped around 10:45 p.m. at Broadway and Mohican Street, and during a search two bags of crack were found in his pocket. When police put the drugs on the trunk of a vehicle and continued searching Beltran, police said he maneuvered near one of the bags and put it in his mouth.

Police were able to get the drugs out of Beltran's mouth and no one was injured. Police said the man tried to eat what would have been a fatal dose.

A passenger in Beltran's car, Xivlaika Diaz, 21, of 530 Broadway, Bethlehem, was issued a summons for possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver.
