Merriam police have arrested a robbery suspect from Wellsville, Kan., who led authorities on a manhunt that lasted several hours Tuesday night and included shots fired at officers.

The name of the suspect had not been released. He was arrested late this morning at the Dutch Maid Apartment Motel in Merriam. Johnson County deputies spent the morning tracking down leads on where the man might be hiding.

Deputy Tom Erickson, spokesman for the Johnson County Sheriffs Department, said the incident started around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Thats when police say the man, along with an unidentified woman, robbed a Caseys General Store in Wellsville in Franklin County, Kan. The man pulled a gun on the clerk and demanded cash, Erickson said.

Wellsville police and Franklin County sheriffs deputies located the pair and began pursuing them along Interstate 35 toward Johnson County. They pulled over off Sunflower Road, and the man jumped out of the car.

He started firing shots at police, Erickson said. No one was injured.

The man then ran off.

The woman drove off in the car and was later arrested after Johnson County deputies placed stop sticks in the road, Erickson said.

Authorities called off a search of the area near Sunflower and I-35 about 2 a.m. today.

Last night, we had a big perimeter, a Highway Patrol helicopter in the area and house-to-house searches, Erickson said.
