Incident Details

Cause of Death: Officer Spaulding died when his patrol car crashed while transporting a suspect. The cause of death is still under investigation, however it is speculated that it was due to a medical condition.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Richard L. Spaulding, a police officer, died Wednesday of natural causes while driving a suspect downtown following an early-morning car chase through the city.

Spaulding, 49, was traveling near where Interstate 264 and Portsmouth Boulevard meet when he apparently suffered a medical problem, drove off a highway on-ramp, down an embankment and collided with a tree.

Spaulding, of Portsmouth, was pronounced dead at Maryview Medical Center at 7:45 a.m . He is survived by his wife, Monica, two children, a grandchild and another one on the way.
