Ariz. -- A Peoria police officer was shot and critically wounded and a murder suspect was killed during an early-morning shootout, officials said.
Officer Bill Weigt, 31, an 18-month member of the Peoria force, was rushed to a Phoenix hospital for treatment of a wound to the upper chest area. Peoria police and firefighters soon gathered at the hospital as a show of support for Weigt, who was reported in critical but stable condition.
A candelight vigil for Weigt was set for 5 p.m. at John C. Lincoln Hospital – North Mountin. Among those to be found at the hospital was Karen Ashley, the deputy Peoria police chief, who described the shooting as "a tragic day for the Peoria Police Department."
