Ga. standoff ends; suspect shot
Domestic dispute: Police go to shopping center parking lot after call from woman who said her ex "was after her."
Police identified the dead man as Duncan Edward Kaulbach, 35, of Bethlehem.
Police initially were sent to the Publix shopping center on Old Peachtree Road at Brown Road shortly before midnight to investigate a domestic disturbance, Gwinnett police Cpl. Darren Moloney said.
Moloney said a woman who lives near the shopping center told police "that her ex was after her and had threatened to kill himself," and that he possibly had a gun.
When officers arrived at the parking lot, they found the man with a handgun.
The SWAT team was called in, and crisis negotiators tried to convince the man to drop his weapon. During negotiations, the man threatened to hurt himself and repeatedly placed the handgun to his head, Moloney said.
When Kaulbach pointed the gun at officers, a SWAT officer fired, hitting the man. He was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
No other injuries were reported in the incident. The SWAT officer who shot the man was placed on routine administrative leave.
Moloney said Kaulbach had been arrested in Gwinnett County in April 2005 and July 2006 on charges relating to alleged domestic violence. He also had a history of "mental issues," Moloney said.
