Tex. officer is fired at, shoots back and hits suspect
By Joshunda Sanders
The officer involved was not injured in the incident, which happened at about midnight in the 1200 block of Silverton Court.
Kevin Buchman, a spokesman for the Austin Police Department, said when the first officer arrived in front of the house, he heard “what he believed to be a round being chambered into a weapon,” on the other side of the door. Buchman said that when the officer moved away from the door, the man came out of the house, shooting.
The officer ran to take cover and returned the suspect’s fire, Buchman said. The suspect was shot, and went back into the home. Police did not release information about how many shots were fired between the suspect and the officers.
When more officers arrived at the scene, the suspect surrendered to police. He was taken to Brackenridge Hospital where he underwent surgery for what officials said are non-life threatening injuries.
Buchman said the officer is white and the suspect is a Hispanic man. The officer who returned fire is being placed on restrictive duty, which is standard procedure, while police investigate the incident.
It was the second time in a week that an Austin police officer has opened fire on a suspect. Last week, Officer Wayne Williamson shot at a burglary suspect during a pursuit. The suspect was not hit and no one was injured in the incident.
