SANTA ROSA, Calif. — A 30-year-old Santa Rosa man was shot to death by police early Monday after he allegedly charged the officers, who thought he may have been armed, authorities said.
Police say they believe they know the man's identity, but say they will not release his name pending further investigation.
The incident began when police responded to a 911 call at 1:15 a.m. from a woman who said her husband was shooting a gun inside the residence on the 600 block of South Avenue, Santa Rosa police Lt. Jon Fehlman said. Officers found the suspect in the driveway of the residence and ordered him to lie face-down, Fehlman said.
The man charged the officers, who fired a "less-lethal plastic projectile" at him, Fehlman said. When the man continued charging, other officers shot him.
The matter is being investigated by the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, assisted by the Petaluma Police Department and the Sonoma County district attorney's office.
