WASHINGTON, D.C. —  An off-duty D.C. police officer was stabbed late Friday outside a Northwest Washington restaurant, and yesterday police shut it down.

The closing of Solo''s, at 3566 14th St., is for 96 hours, but D.C. Council member Jim Graham said he expected a challenge to the restaurant''s liquor license. A restaurant spokesman said it would fight any challenge.

Establishments serving alcohol have been receiving greater scrutiny in the District and Prince George''s County recently, in the wake of violent incidents inside or nearby.

D.C. police Sgt. Joe Gentile said the officer, who was not named because he is a witness, was at the restaurant when he saw two men allegedly assaulting a third. Gentile said the officer identified himself and, with a security guard, took the two outside, where one allegedly stabbed him.

He was listed in critical but stable condition at a hospital. One man was arrested after a security guard chased him, police said. They arrested a second man and charged him with assaulting an officer.

A restaurant spokesman said the restaurant ejected three men, and when the officer went outside a few minutes later, one stabbed him. The spokesman said the stabbing was unconnected to the restaurant.

"The three guys were outside, and the officer came downstairs," Jose Esteves said.

Graham said incidents involving police have occurred at Solo''s, but Esteves said none occurred under current ownership.
