Off-duty officer with gun causes lockdown on Iowa campus

FAYETTE, IA — Iowa Officials at Upper Iowa University in Fayette say the campus was locked down this morning after a report of a man with a gun on campus. Turns out, he was an off-duty police officer visiting the school as a guest.
Spokeswoman Sheila Miller says the university sent out an e-mail alert, all buildings were locked down and a campus-wide sweep was done. Officials then verified the identity of the police officer.
Miller says the university has been working on its safety procedures for several years. Officials held a mock incident on campus involving bombs in the cafeteria in a dormitory on April 14th -- two days before the massacre at Virginia Tech.
Miller says Upper Iowa doesn't feel on edge or threatened, but somebody did see a person with a gun and reported it.
