N.J. police kill suspect in two bank heists
|The suspect had walked out of a Bank of America in Mays Landing with less than $3,000 after handing a teller a note that read: "This a bank robbery. Don't do anything stupid."
A Hamilton Township police officer, recognizing the Acura from a police radio dispatch about the robbery, pursued the vehicle onto the Black Horse Pike near the Hamilton Mall, where the suspect ran a red light and hit another car. The driver of that car was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect then ran into a new housing construction area, where he was confronted by Hamilton Township Officer Leo Rudolph, 28, and the shooting took place. No further details about the shooting were released. The prosecutor's office is investigating the circumstances, Blitz said.
Less than two hours before the Mays Landing robbery, the same suspect used a similar note - this one also saying he had a gun and demanding $15,000 - to hold up a Commerce Bank on the White Horse Pike in Absecon for less than $2,000, Blitz said.
After the shooting, police found a sum of cash and the Commerce Bank holdup note in the man's pants pockets.
