LAS VEGAS- Four people traveling in a car with Utah license plates died Sunday night after a Nevada Highway Patrol car hit their vehicle outside of Las Vegas.

The accident happened shortly before 9 p.m. on I-15 and the St. Rose Parkway in Nevada.

The patrolman's vehicle was traveling north at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, it rear-ended a 1988 Cadillac carrying five adults, all believed to be from Utah, according Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sgt. Chris Jones.

Three of the five occupants were thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene, Jones said. The driver was killed on impact. A fourth passenger, a pregnant female, was flown to a trauma unit at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas in critical condition. The officer sustained minor injuries, from the air bag deployment, and was also hospitalized.

Names of the victims and the officer were not released Monday.
