Teen steals Dallas deputy chief's police car

DALLAS -- A 16-year-old juvenile is in custody after police say he stole a Dallas police deputy chief's vehicle about 6 a.m. Monday from her Pleasant Grove home.

The 2002 Crown Victoria police car was taken from the home of Deputy Chief Brigitte Gassaway, a 21-year-veteran.

Deputy Chief Gassaway heads the special investigations division, which includes the auto theft unit.

An officer dispatched to the chief's house saw the vehicle headed southbound on Jim Miller Road at Scyene Road and turned around to stop it. By the time officers caught up with the vehicle, the suspect had wrecked it at the corner of a nearby side street, police said.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,200.
