LONG BEACH, Calif. — An off-duty sheriff's deputy was shot and killed Tuesday on her way to work, police said.

The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. in a neighborhood about two miles west of Long Beach Airport. Responding officers found the deputy in front of a residence with a bullet wound to her upper body, Long Beach police Officer Jackie Bezart said.

The name of the deputy was not immediately released. She was taken to a hospital, where she died, Bezart said.

The deputy had been on her way to work, but investigators didn't immediately know if she was visiting the home where the attack occurred or if she lived there herself, Bezart said.

No arrests had been made. Investigators were questioning neighbors.
