Ark. man brings gun, drugs to his trial

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

JONESBORO, Ark.  A man was arrested Monday after he took a small gun to his bench trial in Craighead County Circuit Court, Sheriff Jack McCann said.

Sheriff's deputies and Jonesboro police officers found the loaded two-shot 38-caliber derringer in Kevin Brady's pocket about 11 a.m., acting on a tip provided by a woman who is an acquaintance of Brady, McCann said. The officers also found a small amount of methamphetamine in Brady's sock, he said.

Brady, 42, of Jonesboro was scheduled to stand trial before Circuit Judge Victor Hill on charges of breaking or entering and theft, McCann said.

Before he arrived in court, Brady stopped by the tipster's house and told her "he was taking this gun to the courtroom and he was not going back to prison," McCann said. The woman, who was in court on an unrelated charge, alerted Brady's probation officer, McCann said.

After the gun was discovered, McCann said, "[Brady] gave a statement that he was going to shoot another defendant that was supposed to be there." He said Brady appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

"We're just counting our blessings that no one was hurt," McCann said during a telephone interview. "That courtroom was packed." The sheriff's office has a metal detector, donated about two months ago by the local Fraternal Order of the Eagles lodge, but it doesn't have enough deputies to man it for what appear to be routine cases, McCann said. He said he will meet with the circuit judges who hold court in the county to discuss whether additional security measures were warranted.

Brady's bench trial will be rescheduled, McCann said.

Brady, however, returned to court Tuesday on six new charges, including possession of methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm and first-degree terroristic threatening. The judge revoked his $7,500 bond and set bail at $1 million.
