WALTON COUNTY, Ga. A Walton County man was found dead early Wednesday, about eight hours after he exchanged gunfire with sheriff's deputies.

Walton sheriff's Capt. Chris Cannon said the incident began Tuesday afternoon when the man, whose name has not been released, allegedly brandished a weapon inside a BP convenience store in Monroe.

Walton sheriff's deputies were sent to the man's home off Turkey Mountain Trail east of Monroe about 4 p.m.

When they arrived, "they encountered the suspect in the yard. He displayed a weapon and ran in the house," Cannon said.

"At that point, gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the suspect," Cannon said.

Law officers remained outside the home for several hours. When they entered the house early Wednesday, they found the suspect dead.

"It's unknown whether the suspect was shot by deputies or a self-inflicted gunshot," Cannon said.

He said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the incident.
