Chicago officer sentenced to 5 years for off-duty fight
By Norman Parish
CHICAGO — A Chicago Police officer has been sentenced to five years in prison for beating an Iowa college student to the point of brain injury and broken nose and jaw.
The incident occurred in October 2005 near the University of Dubuque campus.
Mette, who was in Dubuque visiting a brother, retaliated, Gallagher said, with a beating that caused severe injuries including two brain bleeds.
Mette, in an interview with WLS-Channel 7, alleged he struck Gothard only once, adding that he is appealing the November conviction, and thus has not started serving his sentence.
This latest incident follows a string of allegations of beatings of civilians by off-duty Chicago Police officers.
