Border Patrol agent dies from heart attack
Officer Down: Border Patrol Agent Eric N. Cabral - [Jacumba, California]
Incident Details: Border Patrol Agent Eric Cabral suffered a fatal heart attack as the result of heat exposure when he and another agent were tracking a group of illegal aliens north of I-8 near Jacumba, California.
SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say the death of a 31-year-old Border Patrol agent last week in a rugged, mountainous area near San Diego could mark the agency's first weather-related fatality
Eric Cabral died Thursday from an apparent heat-related illness. He had been pursuing a group of suspected illegal immigrants on foot near Jacumba on a day when temperatures topped 100 degrees.
An agency spokesman says Cabral "was exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke."
The agency says four agents have died from heart attacks while on duty, but Cabral appears to be the first to die as a result of the weather.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has not determined the cause of death.
