Burglary suspects attempt to run over Fla. deputy

MAITLAND, Fla. A Seminole County deputy sheriff suffered minor injuries in Fern Park late Thursday after a chance run-in with suspects from an armed robbery.

The deputy, whose name was not released, was responding to the report of a hit-and-run accident in the parking lot of Regency Inn, 7400 S. U.S. Highway 17-92, about 8:30 p.m. when she spotted two suspicious-looking men, said Lt. Dennis Lemma, a department spokesman.

When the two men saw her, they dropped what she later discovered was a handgun and fled into a nearby car.

That car hit the deputy intentionally to push her away, then drove off, the deputy told investigators. Law-enforcement authorities caught up with the car about a half-hour later on Interstate 4 between Fairbanks Avenue and Lee Road, but the two men were not inside.

The car's female driver was being questioned early today.

Investigators later learned that an auto-parts store near the motel had just been robbed when the deputy encountered the suspects, Lemma said. Deputies think the two men ran because they were involved in that robbery.

No one was hurt in the robbery. Lemma did not disclose how much money was taken.

The deputy refused treatment and was not taken to the hospital.
