Ohio officer/park ranger dies after head-on crash

SHALERSVILLE, Ohio  — Ohio Department of Natural Resources park ranger and Garrettsville police officer Donavan Svab, 38, of Mantua, was killed in a crash early Sunday in Portage County.

Highway Patrol troopers said Svab was driving a Ford Taurus north on Diagonal Road just past Frost Road at 3:20 a.m., when an Acura RSX going south went left of center. The cars crashed head-on, sending the Taurus rolling into a ditch, where it landed on its roof. Svab, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Christopher Jones, 22, of Kent, was trapped in the Acura for an hour before he was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in serious condition. He is in the Intensive Care Unit this morning.

He, too, had not been wearing his seat belt, troopers said. Blood tests for alcohol are being conducted.

Svab was headed home from his part-time police job when the crash occurred.
