CHILHOWIE, Va. A Chilhowie police officer was shot and injured by a suspect as officers responded to a domestic/suicide call to 161 Tiny Town Avenue Monday morning.

Smyth County Sheriff David Bradley said Chilhowie Police Chief Steve Price and Officer Kevin Testerman responded to the call at about 9:30 a.m. Monday, and found Billy Joe Parris, 43, on the porch of his home holding a single-barrel shotgun. His wife was also on the porch. Parris went inside the trailer and then came back out where he opened fire, Bradley said.

Shotgun pellets struck Testerman in the stomach and arms, and a pellet apparently grazed his head, Bradley said. Parris was struck and injured in the leg by return fire, but Bradley did not know the severity of the wound. Price was uninjured, Bradley said. The sheriff said the number of shots fired by police was one part of the ongoing investigation.
