Off-duty N.J. officer helps cops capture wanted man

The Jersey Journal

BAYONNE, N.J. An off-duty Bayonne police officer spotted a man Monday wanted for a previous scuffle with cops, and stuck around until he was in handcuffs, police said.

Police said the off-duty cop was at Advance Auto Parts on East 30th Street in Bayonne when he recognized Victor Gonzalez, 27, of Broadway, who was wanted on a $15,000 warrant for a resisting arrest charge from August. The cop identified himself to Gonzalez and ordered him to stay put until uniformed backup arrived to arrest him, police said.

There was no resistance from Gonzalez this time, according to police. He was taken to Hudson County jail on nine other warrants, including a no-bail warrant for violating the terms of his intensive surveillance program, as well as for the original charge of resisting arrest, police said.
