BALTIMORE, Md. — A Baltimore police officer shot a man in both legs Saturday night after the man hit his patrol car with a tire iron and, when confronted, threatened the officer, a police spokesman said last night.

The officer was sitting in his patrol car in the 3000 block of Dupont Ave. in Northwest Baltimore about 7:30 p.m. when the man began hitting the cruiser, said the spokesman, Agent Donny Moses.

The patrolman got out of the car to confront the man, who then moved toward the officer with the tire iron, Moses said.

The officer shot the man in both legs. He was taken to Sinai Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, he said. The incident remains under investigation.

Homicide detectives are investigating this incident, as they do all police-involved shootings, Moses said. This is the 28th police-involved shooting this year. Nine have been fatal.
