SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Off-duty city Officer Kevin Kilcullen decided to stop off at CVS on his way to a dentist appointment Tuesday morning, when he spied a suspected robbery.

Standing just outside the door of the drug store on 839 McClellan St., Kilcullen yelled inside for the clerk to call police, then sprang into action.

He raced into the parking lot and grabbed the suspect, who managed to wriggle free, said his younger brother, Lt. Brian Kilcullen, who is the department's spokesman.

A brief foot chase ensued, but abruptly ended when the suspect, identified by police as Kahene Peterkin, stumbled in the middle of Brandywine Road. Kevin Kilcullen, 45, a 16-year veteran of the force, held him until fellow officers arrived.

The 72-year-old robbery victim from Glenville, whom Brian Kilcullen would only identify as "Joe," escaped injury. The man had also stopped at CVS at 9:47 a.m. Tuesday before going to a doctor's appointment.

Police said Peterkin approached the man in the parking lot, flashed a steak knife and demanded money. "He didn't comply immediately," added Brian Kilcullen, noting the man screamed for help.

During the struggle, the man's pants were ripped and Peterkin swiped his wallet containing cash, credit cards and personal papers, according to the criminal complaint. All the items were recovered and returned to the victim.

Peterkin, 32, of Eastern Avenue, was charged with first-degree robbery and fourth-degree grand larceny, the criminal complaint states. He also faces a second-degree forgery charge, accused of signing the bogus name Kasheem McFadden on a fingerprint card while being processed by police, the complaint says.

Peterkin, who court officials say has two prior felony convictions, was sent to the Schenectady County Jail without bail and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing Friday.
