JEFFERSON, Texas — Funeral services with full police honors for a Marion County sheriff’s deputy who died en route to an emergency will be held Tuesday in Jefferson.

Dale Clint Sherrill, 37, of Jefferson was pronounced dead at 5:54 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“I am proud of him. He was protecting his home and the people who lived around here. He was a really good kid,” said Donna Sherrill, his mother.

Dale Sherrill was en route to an emergency call about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday and became involved in a two-vehicle accident at U.S. Highways 49 and 59.

He was driving his county police vehicle, a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, and was using his lights and sirens when the accident occurred, according to DPS reports.

Dale Sherrill was traveling west on U.S. 49. As he proceeded through the intersection, he was struck in his driver-side door by a pickup traveling north on U.S. 59, according to DPS reports.
