For the 37th time, a granite monument on the Decatur Square will be inscribed with the name of a law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in DeKalb County.
The newest name on the DeKalb Officers Memorial will be Dennis Carmen Stepnowski, a detective who died in a gunbattle with a murder suspect on June 29. The suspect also was killed.
Stepnowski was 33.
Because he had worked for the DeKalb police department for 12 years, the beneficiary of his pension plan will be eligible to immediately begin receiving payments of an amount less than one-third of his salary.
Stepnowski also had life insurance through the county, said finance director Mike Bell.
State law provides a $75,000 benefit to the estate of an officer killed in the line of duty.
The money is paid in monthly installments over five years.
Stepnowski was survived by his wife, his parents, his sister and two nephews.
The family requested contributions in his memory to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, 400 Seventh St. N.W., Suite 300, Washington, DC 20004 or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, 1687 Tullie Circle, Attention: Gift Processing, Atlanta, GA 30329.
