BALTIMORE, Md. — A man suspected of running down two plainclothes city detectives near the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg YMCA in Waverly yesterday afternoon was arrested several hours later in a Bolton Hill apartment building.
More than $130,000 in cash and a large quantity of cocaine and marijuana were recovered in the apartment after members of the Western District's SWAT team broke down the door, said Deputy Commissioner Anthony Barksdale during a news conference outside the Cecil Apartments building in the 1100 block of Eutaw Place.
The suspect, whose name was withheld pending multiple felony charges, was described by Barksdale as a high-level drug dealer with multiple drug convictions.
Barksdale said information about the suspect, in his 30s, led police to the apartment building and the man's arrest about 6:30 p.m.
"The arrest came after an intensive investigation by several units of the Police Department," Barksdale said.
He said the suspect had been under investigation for drug violations and was being interviewed at the Northeastern District.
He said it was not known how the man made it to the apartment building, a few miles from where the officers were run down.
The vehicle was recovered not far from the YMCA,
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the 900 block of E. 33rd St., near the YMCA building.
The officers - members of the department's organized crime division - were out of their unmarked police car when they were run down by the driver of an Infiniti sport utility vehicle they had stopped.
A passer-by also was struck before the SUV sped off.
The injured officers, who were driving a light blue Hyundai sedan, were treated on the street by paramedics before they were taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Sterling Clifford, a police spokesman, said that one officer, Steven M. Mahan, 37, suffered multiple fractures of one leg and underwent surgery. Mahan is a 12-year veteran of the Police Department.
The other officer, Gus S. Passamichalis, 42, suffered a less serious leg injury, police said.
