LAFAYETTE, Calif. — An officer who crashed his patrol car late Sunday night was lucky to be able to walk away from the wreckage without serious injury to himself or his K-9 partner, Police Chief Mike Hubbard said today.

The officer involved in the accident was on his way to aid the pursuit of a suspected car thief just before midnight when he crashed his car on Pleasant Hill Road between Green Valley Drive and Reliez Valley Road.

"There was pretty bad damage to the vehicle," Hubbard said. "He's very lucky to be walking away."

What caused the officer to crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, Hubbard said.

The incident that sparked the original pursuit involved a routine traffic stop on Lindsey Court off Buchan Drive. When an officer tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled. Officers and K-9 units were called to assist in the search for the driver, who was not found.

It was determined afterward that the vehicle involved was stolen, Hubbard said.
