PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — Three deputies were injured and a man in his 20s was shot Wednesday morning as the deputies attempted to question and later arrest the man, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies Lorin Tembeckjian, 28, James Evans, 32, and John Orozco, 26, were treated and released for injures from JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller said. The man shot, Bronson Antao, 26, was being treated in Delray Medical Center. He was not in life-threatening condition.
Tembeckjian and Evans stopped the car at a storage facility in the 4300 block Hypoluxo Road. While attempting to question Antao, Antao driver drove into Tembeckjian, hitting him in the leg and forcing him to the ground, Miller said.
As the car was about to drive off, at least one deputies fired at the car and hit Antao in the shoulder, Miller said.
Evans chased the car for about a block on Hypoluxo Road before it stopped due to a flat tire, Miller said. Antao ran into a nearby field with Evans running after him. Two got into a fight with Antao beating the deputy in the face and reaching for his gun. Several minutes later, Orozco showed up and helped restrain Antao.
Tembeckjian suffered head wounds, Miller said. Orozco injured his hand.
"This was a life and death struggle," Miller said. "It could have been a tragic situation."
Antao, whose last address was west of Boynton Beach, faces two counts of attempted murder of an officer, resisting arrest with violent and other charges, Miller said.
Tembeckjian and Evans were put on paid administrative leave as detectives investigate the incident.
