Pa. officer: Videotaped remarks were embellished
ERIE, Pa. — An Erie police officer says he embellished comments that ridiculed a murder victim in a barroom conversation that was videotaped and posted online.
Officer James Cousins II also says he made the comments to make himself seem more important to the investigation than he really was.
Cousins is suspended without pay for the eight-minute rant in which he joked about the killing and mocked the reaction of the dead man's mother.
Cousins says in a letter of apology to the victim's family that he "brought great shame to a good city."
The victim's family and others have called for Cousins to resign and say his 10-day suspension isn't sufficient punishment.
The officer must also undergo alcohol counseling and a fitness-for-duty evaluation.
