Taxpayers may no longer pay Calif. chief's high pension

New legislation would hold harmless the former employers of extravagantly paid officials

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Taxpayers in Simi Valley and Ventura could be off the hook for paying more than $100,000 a year extra for the pension of a former local police official whose projected benefits soared after working a year as police chief of Bell at a salary of $457,000.
